Dear LCC colleagues,

the first edition of this year’s SignIn starts off with the biggest German airline tragedy since decades: Since 24th March and the news on the airplane crash of Germanwings 4U9525, it seems the world has come to a standstill. We are all shocked and even though we are not personally affected, all our hearts and thoughts are with all the people who lost their lives and those who had to stay behind. Our deepest sympathies are also with one of our German LCC colleague who lost customers on board of this tragic flight. In these sad times of severe crisis and sorrow we feel more than ever that we are all one community of world citizens, connected to each other in many ways. 24th May will sure remain one of the saddest and blackest days.

However, this SignIn magazine also starts off 2015 with exciting news. So what is new for 2015? Instead of 6 editions, we this year focus on 4 key editions. Why? Because the magazine sets you in the spotlight: Your stories, your recommendation, your top tips, your knowledge. But stories need profound research, interviews and time. In 2014 LCC was very successful in filling the white spots on the world map. Apart from Canada, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka also on the African continent customers can now consult LCC agencies in Botswana and Zambia. In this SignIn edition we would like to present to your our new Lufthansa City Center Global Travel member LCC Colon Corporativo that has its office in San José, Costa Rica. The director of Business Development, Iván F. Montero was happy to talk to us and tell us about his motivation to join LCC and about his beautiful hometown and country.

What was the motivating factor to join the LCC network and also the service brand LCC Global Travel?
Colon Corporativo is part of Colón Group, which are a group of companies related in the travel industry specialized in corporate travel for local and regional companies. We decided to be part of LCC because we want to be part of a winning team around the globe and LCC is the right match for us in many ways. Our goal is to serve our customers professionally with the best tools possible. LCC Global Travel provides us with exactly these tools to respond the way we need to our customers and to our
own employees. We need to sell trust, confidence to our customers as the best asset we can offer, which will lead us to a good reputation in our market.
What advantages do you expect or hope for from joining LCC and LCC Global Travel?
Great professional team, global presence, networking, cross selling, are our expectations as a new LCC member. We also want to add value to the network, support other LCC needs. LCC has a great reputation that we need to protect and reinforce in order to keep reaching global goals. I do expect to be known as the best travel network in the globe, in which customers will be buying trust instead of tickets.
What would you define as you core competence?
We like to get to know our customers and to anticipate their needs. As a corporate travel agency, we base our actions with our customers on a long term basis, we aim to get to know the trends of our customers industries, their performance and understand the environment to help them take good travel decisions.
How many employees are in your LCC in San José, ensuring everything runs smoothly?
Colon Corporativo belongs to the Colon Group with a staff of close to 600 people. The back office, finances and other logistics issues help our sales team to reach our annual goals and to give the best possible service to our customers. As a team we take care of our accounts, and keep permanently focus on business opportunities. On a daily basis we serve our customers and also have sales calls in which we visit actual customers, and present our company to potential accounts. We are a company that likes to move and compete. No time for relaxing and this is the way we like to be seen.

Insider Tips by LCC Colon Corporativo

What are your top tips for someone coming to Costa Rica for the first time? What can they not miss?
Costa Rica is a democratic country and very safe, but information will be a great practice for anyone who travels for the first time to our region, especially since Costa Rica is a fairly expensive country and we want to make the travellers aware of this fact. Costa Rica is a beautiful country, our people, food, beaches, volcanoes, and much more to enjoy. Costa Rica is well known for its “Pura Vida” which means Pure Life, that is the way we talk and the way we see life, we like to treat people with respect and dignity, so visitors always like to come back.
What restaurants would you suggest for the discerning eater – somewhere with true local flair and taste?
I would mention all local and international restaurants, I would suggest eating there and there, Costa Rican restaurants are great, and also have international cuisine.
In one sentence – why should someone visit Costa Rica?
Costa Rica people welcome all diversity of visitors from all corners of the globe, and love to make all of them feel like home!

Your new LCC Colleague in Botswana

LCC is very happy to welcome a new LCC agency from the African continent in our network: LCC AT&T Travel in Gaborone in Botswana. We asked lovely Evelyn Saindi, travel manager at LCC AT&T Travel, to give us some more inside information about their business and their beautiful country, yet so unknown to us.

Evelyn, why did you and your colleagues decided to become part of our LCC family?
Through South African Travel Centre we saw the opportunity to extent our footprints internationally and LCC has the global reach that every agent should tap in. It is a global family which offers innovative ideas and support.
What advantages do you see or hope for from joining LCC?
We expect to get exposure on a global level, benefit from its services and the
LCC network in terms of ground handling services from the LCC agents worldwide. We also expect to upgrade our service delivery to be on par with the LCC world class standards across the network.
Within the leisure travel market, what are you specialized in?
We are specialized in overland safaris to all tourist destinations in Botswana, explore the Okavango Delta as one of the 7 natural wonders of Africa and enjoy the Botswana Safari with us. We offer cultural and bushman experience of this country which is rich in its culture.

The office in Gaborone office has a small but very dedicated and efficient team of 16 employees.
Botswana must be such an amazing country, but I assume a lot of our LCC are not that familiar with it. What do they have to know? What are your insider tips?
Every visitor to Botswana must be in possession of a passport that is valid until six months after the initial date of travel; however, no visas are required by citizens of EU countries, most Commonwealth countries, the USA, South Africa, Switzerland, Israel and Norway. You can fly to Sir Seretse Khama - Botswana’s main international airport - from Johannesburg but most safari-bound travellers skip it and fly directly to one of the two airports, either Maun or Kasane.

You should not miss the two following places:

“Bakhurutshe Cultural Village”: For a traditional experience Bahurutshi Cultural village is a place to be. This tour can be combined with Manyana rock paintings, Livingstone Kolobeng ruins, Thamaga pottery and finish of the tour with a 2 hours game drive in Mokolodi Nature reserve.

“Okavango Delta”: Declared a world heritage site, the Okavango Delta boost species of birds, plants and vegetation. Whether it is a game drive in Moremi Game Reserve, a mokoro ride (dug out boat) in the pan handles, bird watching or fishing you are sure to have the best time in this tranquil place.

What is your recommendation for a authentic restaurant?
“Rhapsody’s” You can enjoy the best beef grill/ribs with a glass of beer in a cool and serenate environment with a slow jam on the background. “Bull &Bush” also serves sumptuous beef silon/ribs/steak on a hot plate. Live music entertainment, good service and disciplined waiters completes Bull & bush.
The “Botswana Craft” offer a combination of tradition and modern cuisine meanwhile “Bahurutshe Cultural Village” is very strict on its traditional cuisine
When looking to do an exciting and different incentive travel or any MICE event, what would you recommend as unique ideas in Botswana? Can you share a few successful highlights you have organized for clients in the past that other LCC could organize with you?
I highly recommend the “Grand Palm Resort”. It is tranquil and calm and had a beautiful architecture. The property is located close to the city center-large conference carrying capacity (500+ pax).
Also very beautful is Gaborone Sun. For the business oriented people conference facilities that can take up to 250+. For example,last year November we hosted a group of 38 pax from Denver who enjoyed the full service of the hotel including accommodation, meals and conference facilities.
In one sentence – why should someone visit Botswana?
Botswana is a safe and welcoming destination and has been politically stable for many years. The local people are peaceful and unlike many other countries in Africa - there is very little crime. We have some of the most magical wonders of the world on our doorstep – The Okavango Delta , the Makgadikgadi Pans, the Central Kalahari, Tsodilo Hills and the Victoria Falls all within an hour’s flight by light aircraft.

In January you elected the new international Advisory Board. Every LCC had one voice to give to one of the candidates to represent their region when it comes to important strategic decisions. Out of 12 LCC Advisory Board seats in total, 3 candidates were reelected, and 9 members are completely new in their position. “I believe there is an opportunity to promote an “Open for Business” ethos, whereby partners are encouraged to commit wholeheartedly to the LCC concept and proactively work together. There is a danger of some partners currently not reaping the full benefit. The reality being, that small or large we can all work together and truly benefit.”
Name one or two goals you want to achieve as an LCC Advisory Board member?
“I would like to encourage and see that all members achieve the highest LCC star rating so that they can see their efforts, knowledge and skill are valued. Challenging any practices that are either deemed to not add value or perhaps have evolved to become unnecessarily cumbersome and time consuming.“

What excites you the most about the work in the LCC Advisory Board?
“I see a lot of space for improvement in the organisational and strategic position of LCC on the global travel market. The travel market is dynamic and we have to be ready to change ourselves on daily basis if we want to be successful and one of the leading networks worldwide. To be open, when I see how many great colleagues and agencies we have all around the world I do not see any reason why not to be clear No.1 travel network.”
What is your wish for your time on the board?
“We have to stick together, work hard each day, be open and honest, but also we have to show respect to the each member of the LCC family. I want to see much more new
global clients, because without them we will not be able to follow our competitors and we will have problems to get new and keep existing agencies in the network.”

My Real Istanbul Secrets

My best restaurant

The Beyti Restaurant in Florya is where I eat meat since I was a child – this is a true meat paradise! In the old city, Sultanahmet Halk Köftecisi is a local place (always packed of locals) which is also famous for its grilled meat rolls with white bean salad. The Hanedan Restaurant in Beşiktaş is the best Kebap place (the location at the Bosphorus is amazing). And Kanaat Lokantasi in Üsküdar is a place to taste traditional cooked dishes. Fish Lovers must go to Park Fora Restaurant in Kuruçeşme or Körfez Restaurant in Kanlıca – best fish in town!

My tip for “Sweet and Sugar”

You get the best baklava at Diyar Burma with several shops in Asia or Seyidoğlu and Güllüoğlu everywhere in the city. Best candies sure only at Hacıbekir, Hafiz Mustafa in the old city and to Cafer Erol in Asia. For best Turkish cakes and cookies stop at Beyaz Fırın in Kadıköy or at 7-8 Hasan Pasha Firini in Beşiktaş.

“Fast Food” Istanbul Style:

If you want to experience local fast food, buy a simit (sesam bagel) and some kashkaval ( yellow cheese), sit down somewhere and enjoy it. That’s our style!

My best Sunset

For the best sunset, go to Kalamış or Fenerbahçe or to Üsküdar, sit in a tea garden and enjoy your tee whilst the sun sets – that’s unbeatable!

How to get around in Istanbul - local style

Take the Metro! Since 2014 in operation, you can reach the Asian part (Üsküdar or Kadıköy  ) from Europe (Sirkeci) with Marmaray metro line in 4 minutes. By car this can take up to 2 hours. Traffic is a pain! For each metro ride you have to buy tokens at the vending machines, but I recommend the Istanbul card available at IETT selling locations offers reduced fares!

The best kept secret...

Is the number of Kebap types existing – nobody knows! Kebap is the synonym for all meats grilled on charcoal or cooked in a pan with its own juice and oils without putting any additional water. While preparing a kebab, you can marinate the meat with herbs and spices and add vegetables into the pan. These extra ingredients give kebab its specific name – and create the hundreds or thousands of types.

My personal top tip

If you ever make it to Istanbul on October 29th, be at the Bosphorus Bridge at 7 pm – the fireworks and the laser show on the Republic day from here are an unforgettable experience.

Let's take a glimpse behind the scenes of a unique group trip to Istanbul, a forerunner in the GIN environment.

Orhon Atameric shares: “I do clearly remember, as if it was yesterday. It was the LCC General Assembly back in 2010 in Alicante when two LCC met for the first time in person, after many email exchanges: Marion Fuhrmann, LCC Reisebüro Pforzheim and myself, Orhon Atameric, LCC Active Tourism from Istanbul.”

Why was this encounter so special?
Because it laid the milestone for an ongoing partnership for high quality individual groups to Istanbul, accompanied by a famous Pforzheim art historian, looking for the best local touch and authentic Istanbul experience beyond any regular city trip.
Why this match?
Because LCC Reisebüro Pforzheim aimed at enriching their high-end historical arts Istanbul tours with a well-informed and experienced tour guide on site. Orhon was exactly this – well experienced professional tour guide, experiences in new exhibitions at the museums, LCC himself and local expert – all in one! So he was chosen to accompany their group – well prepared, as the German art historian made an inspection tour to Istanbul to jointly created a programme different to anything else in the market.

What makes the best Istanbul tour?
"I establish contact with locals and choose restaurants where also locals eat. You need to smell, taste, see and touch Istanbul, history, people and kitchen! Sure we also included a visit to the Byzantine City Walls, the Golden Horn, the "Flower Market" with several taverns and wine houses and the Pera Palas Hotel  which is one of my favorite places at least to have a dinner or coffee inside. This is where Agatha Christie wrote her roman "Murders  in the Orient Express ". Then we visited sights from the Byzantine Period such as Hippodrome, The Hagia Sophia (an amazing building from the VI.th century which was built as a church in the 6th cent., converted into a mosque when Mehmet II conquered the city in 1453 , since 1935 a museum) and the Underground Cistern one of my favorite places in the Old City.

Some scenes of the James Bond film "From Russia with love" had been filmed in this huge water reservoir from the VI.th and also Dan Brown mentioned this place in his last book the "Inferno". Delicious Istanbul was also part of my preparation – eating like the locals: Sultanahmet Halk Köftecisi is a simple grill restaurant serving the same dishes for more than 80 years. Grilled minced meat rolls with hot pepper sauce and white bean-onion salad and oven fresh bread. Very quick and tasty and inexpensive. We had our Turkish Coffee at the formerly Literature Foundation converted in a Patisserie managed by Hafiz Mustafa candy Shops established in 1864. In here you can taste local sweets like baklava, sweet wraps filled in with nuts and also Asure, a combination of beans, grains, dried fruits and nuts and boiled with sugar first prepared on Arch Noah with leftovers in the pantry, which was the last meal of the biblical journey. And there is so much more to discover.

Istanbul offers so much - and me and my team will be excited to share our local touch with any LCC that wishes to discover our city - our home with us!"

For the 11th time the LCC Headquarters invited LCC members and Preferred Suppliers for a get-together far away from the stressful hustle of the fair. This year the authentic motto of the booth and the event was “I feel Slovenia”.

LCC Kompass d.d., the second oldest international LCC franchisee in the entire network, together with the LCC Headquarters and the Slovenian Tourist Board invited to this special gathering. In 1994 LCC Kompass d.d. joined the Lufthansa City Center network and celebrated its 20th anniversary in the LCC family last year.

We thank Tatjana Jurisevic and the whole LCC Kompass team as well as the Slovenian Tourist Board for their great support. This was a wonderful chance to taste Slovenian delicacies and hospitality - and the LCC spirit, all united at one hotspot: Berlin! A tradition …to be continued. We are looking forward to the ITB 2016!

Skyrocket the LCC Global Travel Brand in Italy

Also in 2015 the positioning and expansion of LCC in the corporate section continues. LCC Global Travel is growing and gaining more and more importance on a global level. In 2014, business travel in Western Europe amounted to almost 325 billion € concentrated in five countries: Germany, UK, France, Italy and Spain.

Right after Germany, Lufthansa City Center has the largest number of travel agencies in Italy (34 members!). No surprise that LCC Global Travel again participated in the Italian Mission Awards (IMA) which took place on 23rd March in Milan to further increase the brand awareness as dynamic and passionate midsize travel management company. IMA is the first Italian Award dedicated to business travel to recognize the best-in–class companies in the Italian market and promoted by Newsteca.

This event intended not only to promote competition amongst the best field operators but also to award the best companies in the corporate travel sector. Successful candidates were examined and judged by an impartial panel of judges consisting of major members of the press and travel managers. IMA is inspired by the long-time consolidated success of BTA (Business Travel Awards), which is considered to be one of the most important annual events of Business Travel Worldwide. Being different – creating awareness
The LCC Global Travel team used the award show to network with various high ranking travel managers. As special highlight to create more attention, the team hired a cartoonist for that day. The plan worked our perfectly: out of the sudden all attendees were queuing at the LCC Global Travel booth up to get their portrait – a perfect a opportunity to engage them in a conversation.

The presence of LCC Global Travel at IMA Awards was a big success. We met with travel managers from KPMG, Acer, Nike who all took home a caricature of themselves to remind them of LCC Global Travel.

2015 has started with a big change for the corporate department of Lufthansa City Center. Prepared in detail already last year, the service brand LCC Business Plus is now rebranded and renamed to LCC Business Travel. The new name is self-explanatory, internationally recognisable and tells at a glance what it is all about: professional business travel management. All logos, guidelines and templates are updated with the new Design and ready to use to guarantee a uniform appearance on the corporate market. To approach customers more efficiently we have created a completely new LCC Business Travel e-brochure with all benefits at a glance.

Panama – my home, my heart

Once in Panama, you cannot miss Pedasi beach. It’s a 5 hour ride from Panama City but worth it. It’s a small town with a diversity of cultures, restaurants and accommodation from hotels to hostels to bed and breakfasts. Pedasi is filled with beautiful beaches and nature, the best part was watching the sunset from the cliff with a glass of wine, perfect paradise getaway.

Where to stay in Pedasi?
I definitely recommend a hotel called Villa Romana. My first impression of the hotel was a reminder of my trip to the south of Italy, and it turned out the owners are Italian. The hotel location is perfect for an escape from everything; it’s on top of a cliff, which gives you an amazing wide view, about 10 minutes from Pedasi town. There isn’t any cell phone signal only Wi-Fi provided by the hotel, but that made it even better to disconnect. To get to the beach you have to walk down a path made by the owners, the beach was beautiful and very clean. For lunch and dinner you could also eat at the hotel restaurant, which was typical Italian homemade food. hotelpedasi.com

Where to eat in Pedasi?
But after eating at the hotel we decided to try something different in the town. After many restaurants and walking around we found the perfect one: The restaurant is called Bienvenidush, amazing middle east Israeli food. I’m a  vegetarian therefore it’s hard to find options for me but here they had homemade hummus, falafel, salads, natural fruit juices’, all good portions at good price. It was quite small and cute with the owners making the food fresh and home-made in front of you. We left the restaurant with a full stomach and happy to have found this little hideaways of locals. 

Sonoran Desert – my best wildlife & nature scenery

My personal recommendation for you for your next trip the US is the Sonoran Desert. It is a North American desert which covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California, and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur. You may think there is nothing to do. But surprise! This place is full of life: places for bird watching, hunting for deer or bighorn sheep, trekking, and hiking or even skiing in winter!

The Sahuaro on the picture is the typical landscape you can explore just across the street. This type of cactus can grow to be over 20 m tall!

Indian Weddings you cannot miss

India is a big country with many fascinating contrasts that it will open your eyes. One “Most Do” is joining an Indian wedding. Wherever you are in India you have to be very lucky and see a parole on the street with the groom and a lot of people behind them, just jump out of the car and join the celebration. On that stage the groom, maybe on a carriage or a horse, is going to the bride’s house and behind him people such as his relatives, friends and some other “gate crasher” as me with music, lights, dancing and singings were following him. As the celebration is a matter of pride and joy they are very enthusiastic to share it with many people, that’s why the weddings are for hundreds of persons and they can last for 2 or 3 days.

Boosting Employee Motivation in Brazil

Brazilians Profit from Original Only Training Day

The Local Country Organization Brazil (LCO Brazil) is our role model when it comes to staff motivation and advanced education for all LCC employees in Brazil. Also 2015, the LCO offered a free of charge motivation and training day for up to 4 participants per Brazilian LCC. And this motivation and knowledge day took place on 17th January in Sao Paulo.

Everyone could attend – as training, accommodation, F&B and transfers were fully sponsored by the LCO Brazil. Time and conflict management were the key topics of this times training. Katharina Schilter (who held an amazing motivational training at the Regional Meeting 2014) was the chosen coach - as she knows best how to emotionally attract attendees to a topic! Prior to the training, the annual LCO General Assembly took place with senior managers and owners to discuss the strategy and future developments.

Flavio Costa from LCC LT Travel in Sao Paulo is the co-organizer of the event and shares with us some insights of the organization and goal of the training.

What was the aim of the training?
“Besides the training in time and conflict management we want to encourage the networking between the LCC attending. We also want to bring together the agents with the local suppliers who also joined the training. This increases soft skills and product knowledge for better sales agents!”

Why did you invite Katharina Schilter as trainer?
“KeSch is the official LCC Training Company for South America Market and we are convinced of her training skills. We organized a poll with themes that could be developed by her. Geraldo Toledo, marketing manager at LCC LT Travel and Úrsula Paul, LCO

Coordinator and I decided which one will be developed and presented to all LCC. We then decide for time and conflict management. As we all know one of these situations where conflicts appear – in teams, with customers….the more professional our employees handle it, the happier are customers and teams!”

“I believe in direct communication combined with interactive session. We received several feedbacks and positive comments for organizing the event. LCC LT Travel has wide experience in this activity. We also seek a link with the motto of this year’s General Assembly when we prepared a gift for each owner to keep the spirit of “Originals Only alive”! We also gave away several prizes as an all-inclusive weekend in Buenos Aires with NH Hotels for a couple, a single ticket to Dubai with Etihad Airways.”

LCC in India Boosts Corporate Awareness

There are a few things in live you cannot outrun. One of them is technology. Technology is part of our daily routine and we have to find a way to use it for our purposes and to take advantages out of it, especially in the corporate business. LCC Travels&Rentals in Kolkata took up this important topic and invited 40 corporate travel managers for a short training session on the question “How to make use of technology for effective travel management”. The meeting took place on 21st November 2014 and had the aim to educate the audience on current technology tools. From the LCC Headquarters, Senior Business Development Manager Pablo Castro was invited to hold the training and inform about effective ways to manage corporate travel and to introduce the world of Lufthansa City Center and the technology tools that are offered like MIS tools, LCC Travel Portal, booking tools, mobile applications and many more.

I thank the LCC Headquarters for your active support and approval for this event without which we could not have done this, thank you so much! I wanted put on record the excellent work that Pablo had put while agreeing to speak during his GT Audit visit to Kolkata. LCC Germany tested “among the best” travel agencies in the country

If in Germany one asks for neutral test results and evaluations, no matter if we talk about vacuum cleaners, baby strolls, cereals or even the service industry like travel agencies, there is only one organization and one magazine everyone counts in: “Stiftung Warentest” (largest, independent product testing institute in Germany). Beginning of this year this organization tested travel agencies in Germany – without prior notice. And the result is a worth a big applause: Together with four other travel agency chains we, Lufthansa City Center, received the test rating “good” with a mark of 2.0, whilst particularly in the “service rating” a “very good” result was achieved. The ratings go from 0,5 - 1,5 “very good” to 4,6 – 5,5 “unsatisfactory”. With this final rating Lufthansa City Center ranks best among the top 5 test winners.

The overall evaluation includes:

  • Consulting: good (mark 2.5)
  • Accuracy of the offers: good (mark 1.8)
  • Service: very good (mark 1.5)

Five locations per travel agency chain were tested. Each travel agency with a different specialization: round trips in South Africa and Turkey where the LCC agencies scored the highest; family cruises, round trips in India and last minute diving trips.

No. 1 Sales Agent for Turkish Airlines

Proud news from LCC AltaVia Travel has reached the LCC Headquarters. The LCC agency in Kosovo ranks 1st on total sales for Turkish Airlines. The airline has 14 flights per week at PRN airport which means they are the airline with the most flight frequency at PRN. Congratulations to the whole team of LCC AltaVia Travel!
